Badger Julius and mouse Macy have imaginative adventures together. They love playing pretend in the forest, painting stars and crowns to go with their capes, swords, and wands. They bring important supplies, such as a storybook, cookies, and nuts. One night, however, their snacks disappear. Julius bravely leads the way into an unfamiliar area while following loud crunching sounds on his search for the terrible "Night Goblin." When they discover that raccoon Sherwin has helped himself to their treats, it's little Macy who gathers her courage and reaches out to him in friendship. Bravery comes in many forms, as lonely Sherwin demonstrates when he takes a chance and agrees to play. It makes sense that these nocturnal creatures would be active at night, and for human readers, the idea of playing outdoors in the dark adds a tantalizing element of not-too-much danger. Watercolor illustrations further the text's magical qualities by adding important details, such as the solitary nature of Sherwin's home. Softly glowing with campfire and starlight, this tale is an inviting bedtime story and a gentle ode to kindness.

Julius and Macy : A Very Brave Night

Kirkus Reviews

A twilight adventure for the toddler set. Two young nocturnal animals are ready to play and explore at night, each brave in their own way: Julius, a badger, is full of curiosity and excitement; Macy, a mouse, is inquisitive but cautious. Warm and fuzzy illustrations create a welcoming atmosphere while the storyline introduces gentle suspense into this cheery nighttime world. When the two realize that their snacks have been swiped, Julius explains that the culprit is likely the Night Goblin, and the two budding heroes (Julius in a blue cape, Macy in a pink dress with a fairy wand) courageously set out to solve the mystery. The Night Goblin, ensconced in a shadowy cave, turns out to be a lonely raccoon, and Julius and Macy, at Macy's instigation, approach him gently, learn about sharing, and find themselves on the way to making a new friend. While the messages about generosity and courtesy are beyond reproach and the idea that bravery can take many forms is very welcome, gender stereotypes are present in full form, from the colors and costumes the two are wearing to their behaviors and attitudes. Still, many young listeners will appreciate the warmth and sweetness of this comforting selection as they follow the appealing, accessible tale and learn about kindness and friendship. A warm nursery tale sprinkled with traditional sugar and spice. (Picture book. 2-5) Copyright (c) Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
